Concurrent Session Format Suggestion

Storefront sessions of 20 minutes each that could integrate DE and learning/teaching/curriculum developtment/renewal ideas (rapid fire learning!); be offered 2 or 3 times in succession; and that would follow a theme e.g. 'Getting Started' or 'Getting Connected' and/or answer questions such as:

  • How do I start?
  • What's important to consider?
  • Who do I connect with?

A Tweet and a Poke: How Educators Harness the Power of Social Networks

In the last few years, the world of educational technology has changed significantly. Many new tools that allow for easy communication and collaboration have emerged and we are witnessing unique educational and social events. Blogging has become a world-wide phenomenon. Collaborative websites like Wikipedia have emerged to challenge our assumptions and beliefs about the nature of knowledge and the processes of knowledge creation. Video-sharing sites like Youtube have changed the way individuals share their voices and experiences, and sites like these have become outlets for political, cultural, and educational conversations.

 

One of the most popular tools are Social Networks. A recent Neilson media poll shows that Social Networks have now surpassed email as one of the primary activities people do when they go online, with the 35-49 age group the fastest growing demographic to embrace social networks. What implications does social networking have on education? And how are educators using social networks to not only engage their students, but also connect with each other?

 

Dr. Alec Couros is actively engaged in social networks as both an educator and a participant. A graduate level professor in the University of Regina's Faculty of Education, his coursework focuses on how educators can best use these tools to reach their educational objectives.
